It is really quite funny how everyone makes the same sort of jokes about management consultants and what they do and how they do it... but they really do fill a role in organizations, that you describe above, that seems nobody else is fulfilling.
Do you find the best leaders need management consultants for the same reason mediocre leaders need them? I'd like to think that great leaders can be effective in their organizations without the consultants.
As an independent activist & community builder this post really helped me feel validated because my being a catalyst for change is precisely this dynamic! It involves rigidity in mindset, motivation & process, with additional constraints of capacity and deeply ingrained me against you culture of fingerpointing! The leadership is scapegoated to a degree, treated as a fool or a whipping- post to a degree also. I come with exunerance, compassion & alot of proven solutions! However, I face misogyny, power trips and wow alot of liars and corruption! It is so hard to keep my spirits up! I am independent for a reason, these NGO's expolit problems they are paid to fix and capitalize further by manipulatimg the culture of mistrust! I pray but it is hard not having compsssionate mentors or collaborators with my level of integrity. Any advise on these issues is welcomed! Thanks again for this post!

Sure but there is overuse that poor leaders can -- and do -- hide behind. The hollowing-out consequences may not be worth it. https://hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/last-mile-expertise
Morning, Hollis. Any great behavior can be reduced to a mere technique and then cost a leader their credibility when trying it out.
Should leaders who already have that reputation not even try?
Sometimes having a third-party checker makes all the difference.
I have been on the consultant side here. Leaders often find it really frustrating that they will say the same thing I do but it just lands different.
True enough, Jo Lein.
There is an opportunity for leaders who can notice that -- and won't just complain about it.
