Sadly, in many organizations, processing email is considered productive time. When processing email is considered as valuable as addressing issues, making decisions, and coaching others to success, leaders and team members feel self-satisfied by spending their time reading and responding to email.
This a huge issue, especially in large organizations, where I see many leaders who show up each day with no plan other than to process email and attend the calls that drop on their calendar. It’s turns into an organizational case of the proverbial tail wagging the dog. Very reactionary.
Oh, a world without email. Only if someone would write a book about it :) Unless I am waiting for something, I only check my email a couple of times throughout the day. Another thing I do to try to help other people is not add to the insanity - I tend to send very few emails to people over the course of a week.
