When you find others don’t speak up in conversations and meetings, take a hard look in the mirror. It’s usually because of something you do — or don’t do. What are you doing to suppress the desire of others to engage? This is not an accusation of fault. In many cases, leaders stifle risk-taking and engagement in groups just by their position of power over others.
This is a great reminder. Thank you. As a wise person once told me, knowing when calling out won't work and instead working to call up is a very nuanced way to get engagement and ensure all are heard from. Having said all that, there is also a place to check in if this is a power move on the part of the silent. In an extroverted culture, the silent can have a good deal of influence - particularly if they follow meetings with meetings to debrief. So, all that to say: while i appreciate the reminder to check myself, i caution all leaders not to eat this whole and look outside of the immediate to patterns of behaviour. Group dynamics, power and politics also need consideration if we are to build psychologically safe environments for all.
Certainly, Sharon, when you're looking at the behavior of a single person the motivations could be any number of things. This reminder is for those that see routine silence everywhere they turn. Thank you for the clarification.
Just passed this along to one of my coachees who is actively working on techniques to improve meeting participant interactions. Thanks!
Glad it could be useful for you, Susan. Thanks for taking the time to mention it.
