Technically speaking, tough love is “affectionate concern expressed in a stern manner.” Usually reserved for someone deeply cared for but who needs a strong message, tough love is an idea that is both demanding and compassionate.
The tough part (is that a pun? Could be), in the professional setting, is trying to cultivate the love when you don’t naturally possess it for an individual.

It feels like there is an unmentioned next step.
It's that simple only for leaders who are used to offering helpful support and encouragement.
