I work in Clinical Research, which means that I lead teams that promote, recruit, and run clinical trials of groundbreaking new medicines, medical devices, and new medical procedures. While we are strictly forbidden from using any whiff of coercion (sales tactics) in our efforts, it has to be admitted that this is at least partially, a sales job because without study participants there is no research. This article describes EXACTLY the difference in focus between study teams and upper management that has no research experience. Non-research managers focus only on the enrollment numbers (sales) while those who understand and work on the teams recognize the essential nature of the conversations with potential study participants, their family members, stakeholders within the clinical team, and other researchers. It is so true that the quality and quantity of these conversations drives enrollment.
