Hiring terrific new talent can invigorate your team. But, sadly, some leaders actually feel threatened by new talent. They end up hiring the wrong people. To avoid being upstaged by someone new, they select talent that is a step below them and won’t compete for a seat at the table.

Old saying: 10s hire 10s, 9s hire 8s. 8s hire 7s and 7s hire 3s. This is more true than we would like to believe.

When we really stand for growth and talent, we have to rise above our insecurities and work to hire people who will one day be better than we are. In the words of Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, “Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius.”
