I love this reframing of feelings, I have learned this trait from being prior military and from being in the fire service. I attempt to teach this reframing ability to my rugby players as well. Thank you for this quick read.
What has worked best for me in teaching it to others is by using the roller coaster analogy. I have my rugby players recognize and acknowledge the physical feelings that they are experiencing . Then I ask them if they are nervous or anxious, usually they tell me yes. That's when I ask them to tell me how they felt when waiting in line to ride a roller coaster or jump of a cliff into the lake, most if not all will state the same physical feelings, then I ask them if they were nervous then or excited. Nine times out of ten they will state excited, now that they have mental reference point of labeling the feelings of being nervous and being excited. That is when I tell them before kick off that they are excited to play and test their skills and training against another team. I hope this explanation made sense, thank you for the question.
