Of the many ways we can gain insight, learn how things work, and come to appreciate the details connected to high performance, perhaps none is more powerful than to follow or shadow someone with experience and skill.
In the restaurant industry they had us shadow with the chef for a shift (this allows both parties to see if the fit is mutual). I do not know if this is still a practice. I found it helpful for the short period of time I was in executive dining. In the other industries, I have applied/worked in, I was told they don't allow that. I suspect this is due to laws, pay, lawsuits, etc.. I suspect this is due to hiring people unfamiliar with culture/es and a strong sense of entitlement and/or security reasons.
