Several years ago I attended leadership event where a form of the first question "Does everyone on the team know what it means to win?" was asked (the question was "What does winning look like? Does everyone on your team know?"). We went around our group of 10 people and answered. It was eye opening how often the leader's answer was vague, unclear, or ill defined. I wasn't exempt, I realized I had to tighten up my definition of winning. The lesson I took was how critical it is to answer that question in a clear, concise, and simple way so that everyone can understand how their role contributes to success (question #3), and without that understanding, people won't understand why their personal sacrifice is necessary to achieve the overall team goal, and will be unwilling to do so. This is particularly true when resources are scarce and trade-offs need to be made, and one team needs to give up resources in support of another. Hard to get buy-in if they don't understand how that sacrifice helps the broader team win!
