Being indirect to be direct is a needed skill in the workplace where many may be offended by outright directness but will harbour it silently and never say anything about it.

I think a good leader should know who can take direct communication and who would benefit better from a more subtle approach.

Do you think that some staff would prefer the harsher communication from their manager because it takes less time to reach a resolution (and hopefully a shorter meeting!), whilst others as you say would never raise a point in meeting again!
